Everybody, grab your umbrella partner!

We set off to celebrate the Fourth of July at a restaurant across town that apparently has delicious American food, called Grandma’s Kitchen. Everybody invited their Chinese roommates too, so that we could celebrate the end of their exams.

When we left the dorm, it was raining a bit, but not enough that we thought we should stay in. So all 26 (yes, 26 of us, though this time, we knew where we were going) hopped on the bus, headed for the subway. When we got off at our stop, it started raining, and since I left my umbrella in Houhai, I picked up another one before running to the subway. When we got out at our stop, it was raining so hard that you got wet even if you were standing inside. We waded out into the street to walk to the restaurant, only to decide it was better if we waited inside for the rain to pass.

It poured for about 20 minutes while we stood inside, huddled up next to each other because we had planned on going out after dinner so no one thought to dress practically. When it finally stopped enough to walk, we had about a 10 minute walk to the restaurant. There were trees down in the road, and one of the streets had flooded. I suppose I should have paid more attention to the fact that it is the RAINY season in Beijing right now.

The floods and the water were not terrible though, because there was a delicious omelet and a milkshake (a delightful combination) at the end of that gray cloud. I think there wasn’t a much better way to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day in a communist county. And I think this might have been the first time that we had been out as a group, all of the kids in the program and most of their roommates.

Will tried to build us a bridge to walk across the street.
After our delicious meal. Was it as good as my own grandma's kitchen? Negative. But it's the closest I can get in China.

The water flooded the street.

Dry, on the subway, before it all went crazy.
