Hiking around the Summer Palace was absolutely exhausting, so when we got back to Capital Normal we were downright starving. No one was in the mood to eat noodles in the shop across the street or 5 kuai Sichuan foods at the tiny hole in the wall restaurant, so we decided to get back on the bus and attempt to find somewhere better. I suggested Houhai, since there’s are lot of places all right near each other, so we made our way to the bus. It turns out that I have no memory, and we climbed on the 108 bus (instead of the 118). When we finally realized we were on the wrong bus, we were in the middle of nowhere. At least there were six of us.
We hopped on another bus headed back towards civilization and when we passed a restaurant that we recognized from the guidebook, we hopped out. According to all of the guidebooks and our survival guides provided by our resident director, the Kro’s Nest serves the best pizza in Beijing (You may begin to see a pattern here; I ate pizza for the second time in two days. I do not eat this much pizza ever, but it is apparently the only kind of western food available, so I will keep on eating).
We were pleasantly surprised that the guidebook did not lie, the pizzas were delicious, cheap, and the manager spoke English because he’s from Indiana. As an added bonus, they played excellent music, Chase and I sang along to Prince as we walked in and that was quickly followed by some of my favorites, Bob Dylan, Cake, Weezer, and some Beck.
The Kro’s Nest was definitely far better than the Cat’s Eye could ever aspire to be. And they’re opening a new restaurant near us. We’ll be there for the opening night.
